There is something really magical about seeing spring flowers emerging that lifts the spirits after the greyness of the winter months. Vibrant crocuses and golden daffodils adding colour and hope to the muted colours of a landscape that has endured winter.
‘Where flowers bloom, so does hope.’ - Lady Bird Johnson
March signifies the start of spring and a time of hope and new growth. The length of the days are starting to stretch and temperatures are rising. Nature responds, at first slowly, but as spring ramps up growth accelerates all around, as seeds lying dormant in the soil germinate and the buds of trees swell and explode into new growth.
For anyone that has grown a plant from a seed will know, it takes time once a seed has germinated for the seedling to become established. It appears to sit there for ages after it has put its first leaves out seemingly doing little. Actually, it is doing most of its growing below the ground at this stage, establishing a strong root from which to nourish itself and grow more.
We are a bit like a seed. We can lie dormant - sometimes for years - waiting to germinate, sitting on the perpetual treadmill of life existing, but not growing, until one day we make the right conditions for ourselves to ‘germinate’ and start to grow. Seeds need the right levels of light, moisture, temperature and a substrate on which to grow. Germination can happen in an instant, but of course growth takes time. For us, this can start with a decision to make a positive change. Taking that first tentative step can be massive, but once we have made it, and as long as we grow roots (good habits that will nurture us), growth will follow.
However, know this; even if your ‘substrate’ or personal situation is far from ideal, you can still grow and even flourish as a person if you make the right conditions for growth. Even starting with as little as 5 minutes to invest in yourself on a daily basis can be enough to get started and you will soon find yourself making more time for your growth as you begin to reap the benefits.
Whether you are still a ‘dormant seed’, a ‘small seedling’ or a ‘fully thriving plant’, I would encourage you to embrace spring and make the right conditions for yourself to grow and flourish. Remember, it all starts with that one decision to change and that first step of planting the seed. Happy spring everyone!
'It is only the farmer who faithfully plants seeds in the Spring, who reaps a harvest in the Autumn.' - B. C. Forbes
